Samsung has developed an alternative to Apple Face ID

In its new 14th generation iPhones, Apple has replaced the notch with a so-called Dynamic Island – a small dark area with a camera and sensors. South Korean manufacturer Samsung filed a patent for a dual under-screen camera. And judging by the published drawings, the photosensors are located above and below, and not side by side. This arrangement is likely to significantly improve biometric face recognition technology by scanning from two different points and obtaining a more detailed and three-dimensional image.

Such technology could especially take root in smartphones with flexible displays, where under-screen cameras could be located left and right, and not top and bottom, as in conventional models. At the same time, manufacturers will have to use advanced displays, since the integration of two cameras at once will clearly require modifications to existing technologies.

The quality and accuracy of such a biometric system is very important to Samsung. As a patent approved by the South Korean authority KIPRIS in 2021 indicates the need to track the size and position of the eye’s pupil during the scanning process. Probably in this way the system will be able to distinguish a person from a fake (a mask or a printed photograph of the owner).
The guys at Phone Arena took a close look at the contents of the Settings app APK file in the latest Android Oreo beta for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and found something interesting there. In particular, we are talking about a feature called Intelligent Scan, which will be equipped with the new Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9 + smartphones.
This feature will combine the iris scanner, which has long been available on Samsung smartphones. As well as there is also 3D face scanning technology. YouTuber Maxwell Weinbach posted a six-second video showing the technology in action. In addition, the source code of the system contains the phrase “Unlock your smartphone using a face and iris scan.”
Judging by the numerous leaks, Samsung still decided not to copy the cutout at the top of the screen from the iPhone. So, they opt for the usual “visor” with sensors and cameras. At least in this South Korean friends retain their identity.
